ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS -
IN THE EYES OF HAZRAT UMAR IBN AL KHATTĀB!
Hazrat Umar Ibn Al Khattāb passed on a great
deal of wisdom to guide the faithful. For example, he advised: 'Don't judge anyone according to how many prayers he says or how many fasts he keeps, judge according to whether he speaks the truth, guards what's entrusted to him, and respects the difference between lawful and unlawful'.¹
These words of Hazrat Umar Ibn Al Khattāb
show that, true prayer and fasting leads us to
refrain from all evils acts. Prayer or fasting by someone who does not work to train his lower
self will bring no benefit. Such prayer or fasting
will receive no blessing, and so will not keep
one from evil and mistakes.
Hazrat Umar Ibn Al Khattāb reproved certain
people who stopped working for a living, claiming: 'We are the people of trust in Allāh'. He told them: 'You do not trust in Allāh, but in the property of others. The true people of trust are those
who plant their seeds, and then trust Allāh.'²
A man was speaking in praise of someone.
Hazrat Umar Ibn Al Khattāb asked: 'Have you
ever travelled with him? Have you ever been a neighbor to him? Have you ever traded with him?' and the man gave negative answers to all of these questions. Hazrat Umar Ibn Al Khattāb said: 'I
swear by Allāh that you do not know that man.'³
The most important point for the judgment
of people is, as our ancestors said: 'Actions
speak louder than words', if you want to build
firm character and develop a spiritual personality,
the fact will make itself apparent in your interpersonal and your other undertakings,
as well as what you say.
The quality of a person's actions was therefore
the most important principle guided Hazrat Umar Ibn Al Khattāb's approach to life. Just want to finish off with a saying of his: 'Among the people whom
I do not know, the most beloved to me is the one
who has a good name. Among the people whom
I do know, the most beloved to me is the one who
has good manners. Among people whom I am examining, the most beloved to me is the one
who speaks the Truth.'⁴ (¹Al Sunan Al Kubra of
Al Bayhaqi, ²Jami Al Ulum of Ibn Rajab, ³Al Ihyā
of Al Ghazali, ⁴Al Manaqib of Ibn Al Jawzi)

Light of Dawn
I wake with the light of the dawn whispering with joy in my heart and with praise on my lips. In stillness and twilight i stand before you bowing, prostating i call Allahu (swt).
My eyes see your beauty in the dawn's golden hues. My ears hear the thunder as it gloriies you. The rhythm of my heart beats the sound of your name. My breaths rise and fall with the tide of your praise. My soul knew and loved you before i was born and without your mercy is lost and fortorn.
Wherever i may wonder down the pathways of life, my cry to you Allah (swt), is "guide me to ligfht" through all fear and helpness, to you do i turn for your breath of healing and peacedo i yearn. For all that i have , my Allah (swt) all that i am is from you, is for you and to you will return. Inshallah
