Al-Hasan Al-Basri(RA)was one of the early sufi's of the time. As he wore a cloak all his life made from wool (suf). Hadrat Umar Farooq (RA) once supplicated for Al-Hasan Al-Basri (RA) with the words: " O Allah make him wise in religion and beloved to the people".
Al-Hasan Al-Basri (RA) was the son of Zayd ibn Thabit who was the beloved Prophets (s.a.w)stepson. He was a great ima of Basra the leader of Saints. He was very well known for his strictness to the Sunnah of the Prophet(s.a.w)
Ibn Qayyim al-Jawzi wrote a 100 page book on his life and manners entitled Adab al-Shaikh Al-Hasan ibn Abl Al-Hasan Basri(RA). He wrote in his book that when Al-Hasan Al-Basri(RA)died he left behind a cloak made from wool which he had worn during all summers and winters and it was still in a state of cleanness and quality. SubhanAllah...Also in his book he mentions that Al-Hasan Al-Basri(RA) devoted all his life to the deeds of sufi's Rawdat al-muhibbin wa nuzbat al-mushtaqin (the garden of the lovers and excursion of the longing ones). Many used to question that who is the handsome person at that time and the response was always " It is a Shaikh wearing a balck turban meaning Al-Hasan Al-Basri(RA)"
Abu Nu Aym Al-Islanabi(RA) mentions in his biographies of Sufi's entitled Hiyat Al-Awliya (The Adornment of the Saints), that it is Al Hassan's(RA) student Abd Al Wahid ibn Zayd(RA) who was the first person to build a Sufi Khanqah at Abudan between the borders of Iran and Iraq.
It was basis of Al-Hasan Al-Basri(RA) and his students that as sufi's that Ibn Taymiyya stated: "Tasawuff's place of origin is Basra" in his essay Al-Sufiyya Wa Al-Fuqara. This is a misleading assertion to accusing Al-Hasan Al-Basri(RA)having invented tasawwuf. But Basra is a chief among places of renown for the formal development of the school of purification which became known as tasawwuf. But those principles are none other than the Quran and the Sunnah.
Imam Ghazali (RA) relates Al-Hasan Al-Basri(RA) words on jihad Al-Nafs in the section of his Ihya entitled Kitab Riyadat Al-Nafs Wa Tahdhib Al-Akhlaq Wa Mu Alajat Amrad Al-Qalb (book of the training of the ego and the disciplining of manners and the healing of the hearts disceases). SubhanAllah...
Al-Hasan Al-Basri(RA)says two thoughts roam the soul:
1) One from Allah(swt) 2) One from the enemy.
Allah(swt) shows mercy on a servant who settles at the thought that comes from Him. He embraces the thought that comes from Allah (swt). whilst he fights against the one from his enemy. The Prophet(s.a.w) said " The heart of a believer lies between two fingers of the Merciful" (Muslim,Ahmed, Tarmizi and Ibn Majah).
The fingers stand for upheaval and hesitation in the heart.
And yet some ignorant people say the Tasawwuf sufism of these great Shaikh's are a bad bidats or Unislamic practises. May Allah (swt) give them all Hidiyah. There is nothing that can be done to people or groups who follow there own line of Islam. This practice is from our beloved Prophet(s.a.w) and yet is ignored. May Allah give them Hidayah otherwise they will get what they deserve on the Day of Recogning. May allah (swt) protect us all from fitnah and from people who are misleading the Sunnnah or our beloved Prophet(s.a.w). AMEEN
On the authority of Aby Hurayrah(RA)who said that the Messenger(s.a.w)of Allah (swt) said "Whoever shows enmity to someone devoted to me, I shall be at war with him.My servant draws not near to Me with anything more loved by Me than the religious duties I have enjoined upon him. My servant continues to draw to Me So that i shall love him. When I love him I see and hear all that he does. where he asks surely I would give it to him. I do not hesitate anything as much as hesitating about the soul of my faithful servant. SubhaAllah. Hadith Qudsi no.25 it was realted by Al-Bukhari.
" Lo verily the friends of Allah(swt) are those on whom fear not nor do they grieve. those who believe and keep their duty to Allah(swt)theirs are good tidings in the life of the world and hereafter. There is no changing the words of Allah(swt) that is the supreme Triumph (Quran - Surah Yunus 62-64)

Light of Dawn
I wake with the light of the dawn whispering with joy in my heart and with praise on my lips. In stillness and twilight i stand before you bowing, prostating i call Allahu (swt).
My eyes see your beauty in the dawn's golden hues. My ears hear the thunder as it gloriies you. The rhythm of my heart beats the sound of your name. My breaths rise and fall with the tide of your praise. My soul knew and loved you before i was born and without your mercy is lost and fortorn.
Wherever i may wonder down the pathways of life, my cry to you Allah (swt), is "guide me to ligfht" through all fear and helpness, to you do i turn for your breath of healing and peacedo i yearn. For all that i have , my Allah (swt) all that i am is from you, is for you and to you will return. Inshallah
