The Hujrah (room) in which Prophet Mohammad (SAW) along with his two great companions is buried in, was first surrounded by a wall which was made of mud. Keep in mind that all the graves were no more than a few inches high.
Hazrat Umar (RA) was the first one to build a stone wall there which was not very tall. Later on that was was made longer by Abdullah ibn Zubair (RA).
Hazrat Umar ibn Abdul Azeez (RA) then built another wall surrounding this wall in 91 H. Even before this wall was built the Hujrah was not even enterable. We find out by what Abdullah ibn Mohammad ibn Aqeel narrates. He says " I used to go to the Masjid each night to pray my tahajjud. One night I went and when I was coming back home a certain very nice scent came to my nose which I had never smelled before. I came back to the Masjid to find that one of the walls is broken. I quickly went inside to convey my salaam. In the meantime the governor (Umar Ibn Abdul Azeez (RA)) had found out so he came, and a 5 sided wall was immediately rebuilt. (Tabaqat ibn Saad)
Allamah Samhudi mentions that during the time of Al Malik Qaitabaee (881 H), the eastern wall had holes and the northern wall was leaning towards the outside. They tried filling the holes for some time. They then decided to break the wall to build a new one. When they eventually broke the 5 sided wall (on Sha'ban 14, 881 H), they saw that there was already a four sided wall made of stones similar to those on the Ka'ba there, which was very weak also. (So there was two walls surrounding the graves) They broke that and rebuilt both of the walls, first a four sided wall surrounding the three graves and another five sided wall surrounding the four sided wall. Allamah
Samhudi mentions "At this time I had a chance to go in and saw that all the graves were ground level, and one had a little hump, maybe it was Umar (RA)'s grave". A little dome similar to the one we see on top of the masjid, was also made on the five sided wall. It was made of white marble and a small window was put on the dome. (This window faces a window on the green dome that we see today). No door, nor a place for a door was put into these walls. (Wafa ul Wafa 2:63, 2:617-632)
Allamah Barzanji writes about an event that took place in 1296 H. He writes that the Sheikh of the Haram with some of his friends went to the roof to see the Hujrah from the window on the dome. I was accompanying him. (As mentioned there is a small window there through which another small window can be seen on the dome inside through which the graves can be seen).
It was square, and on it was a material cover, so we could not see anything.
WE COME TO THE FINAL CONCLUSION WHICH IS THAT THERE IS TWO WALL SURROUNDING THE GRAVES, WITH NO WAY TO ENTER IT.
Now going to the metal grills around the Rauza that we see, the five sided wall or room is inside it. They were originally made of wood in 668 H, and upgraded to metal ones in 888 H. There is a sign which is still there which says that it was put on by Al Malik Qaitabaee.
There is a total of 4 doors to enter the metal grill area. The dates that are mentioned on these doors are all different. Only the eastern gate (Bab Fatimah RA), is opened at times. EVEN THOUGH THE GATES CAN BE ENTERED THERE IS NO WAY THE FIVE SIDED WALL CAN BE ENTERED.

Light of Dawn
I wake with the light of the dawn whispering with joy in my heart and with praise on my lips. In stillness and twilight i stand before you bowing, prostating i call Allahu (swt).
My eyes see your beauty in the dawn's golden hues. My ears hear the thunder as it gloriies you. The rhythm of my heart beats the sound of your name. My breaths rise and fall with the tide of your praise. My soul knew and loved you before i was born and without your mercy is lost and fortorn.
Wherever i may wonder down the pathways of life, my cry to you Allah (swt), is "guide me to ligfht" through all fear and helpness, to you do i turn for your breath of healing and peacedo i yearn. For all that i have , my Allah (swt) all that i am is from you, is for you and to you will return. Inshallah
